Al-Makhwah Governorate

It is one of the governorates of Al-Baha Province. It is the first city within the ‎Tihamah area of Al-Baha Province. It abounds with many heritage sites.‎

Location:‎

It is characterized by its distinguished location. It is situated on valley-‎bounding plateau within the Tihamah area of Al-Baha Province. It includes ‎several historical sites and the most prominent locations in the Province and ‎the Tihamah. It is the prime destination and meeting point for those arriving ‎from Makkah Al-Mukarramah and Asir. It abounds with heritage sites with ‎great history including Thee Ain Heritage Village, Al-Makhawa Heritage ‎Village, Al-Asdaa Village as well as other heritage villages. It includes the ‎popular (Tuesday) Market. It is of the oldest markets throughout the region ‎and the whole Southern Province. It is also located on the banks of some ‎valleys such as Wadi Diayan, Wadi Suqmah, Wadi Al-Ahsaba and Wadi Rash. ‎It includes Shada Al-Aala (Higher Shada) Mountain, where the reservation is ‎located, Al-Qara, which is a place of attraction for climbers, and Shada Al-‎Asfal (Lower Shada) Mountain famous for the diversity of aromatic plants ‎and the cultivation of famous Shada coffee beans and fruits of all kinds.‎

Al-Makhwah has six administrative centers, namely Nawan Center and Neera ‎Center of Class (A), Al-Jawah Center, Shada Al-Aala Center, Shada Al-Asfal ‎Center, Wadi Mumna Center, and Al-Ahsabah Center of Class (B).‎

Geographical Location: ‎

It extends from Al-Jawah Center to the north, passing through areas of Al-‎Makhwah Governorate to the east, Al-Ahsaba and Nawan Centers to the ‎south and Wadi Mumna, Shada Al-Aala and Nira Centers to the west. ‎


Area:

The area of Al-Makhwa Governorate is 1274.25 km2.‎


Population:‎

The population is 82,404 (according to statistic of 1437 A.H.), the number is ‎currently more than ninety thousand people.‎


Climate:‎

Hot in summer and mild in winter, with varying amounts of rainfall between ‎the two seasons, and the mountainous climate of Shada Higher and Lower ‎Mountains, as it is relatively cold in winter and relatively mild in summer.‎


Topography:‎

Al-Makhwah Governorate and its centers consist of several plains, valleys, ‎and series of mountains as Shada Higher and Lower Mountains and Qarama ‎Mountain, as well as large valleys with dense trees, running water, and sand ‎dunes. ‎


Wildlife:‎

  • ‎ The governorate has plant diversity, including more than (400) plant ‎species, including juniper, wild olives, breonadia salicina and Shada coffee ‎trees. They are located on the heights of the Shada Higher and Lower ‎Mountains.‎
  • There is animal diversity and Shada Al-Aala Center is home to the Arabian ‎leopard as well as predators such as the Arabian wolf and the striped hyena, ‎lynxes, foxes, ferrets and porcupines, and the hyrax.‎
  •  There are several species of birds such as falcons, hovering eagles, ‎guineafowl, species of birds and migratory birds.‎
  • Shada Al-Aala and Al-Asfal Reservations include inscriptions and ‎drawings.‎
  • There are some reptiles in the reservation such as poisonous snakes and ‎agamas, as well as freshwater turtles.‎

Agricultural Wealth

The governorate is famous for its distinguished agricultural production and a climate suitable for many crops including all types of fruits such as mangoes, citrus fruits and bananas. It is famed for the cultivation of coffee beans, vegetables, leaves, field crops (millet and corn) and ornamental plants such as pandanus at Thee Ain.
